Evan's Maiden Magbooth Voyage

This past weekend I was given the opportunity to take a little work trip down to Austin, TX. After hearing we needed someone to work a wedding down there, my volunteering hand shot in the air like a kid yearning to answer the next Geography question. Although the trip was short, it produced quite a few interesting happenings.

My plane ride from Louisville to Memphis went well. I should’ve seen the foreshadowing of a rough trip, though, when on my plane to Austin, I had an entire can of Tomato juice spilled in my lap. I think I could’ve handled Coke, Sprite, heck – even orange juice, but there was something about sitting in a muggy bisque that really made me an unhappy camper when I exited the plane.

There were a few more bumps along the way – rental car mishaps, a last minute scavenge for a belt, and an unpaid tollbooth. No sweat off my back though. Unless you count the endless hours of sweat that eventually stained my favorite dress shirt. I also managed to work half of a beautiful wedding with dry-erase marker on my forehead. Faaaaaantastic stuff.

Saturday afternoon I attended Chris & Sangeeta’s wedding in Austin and it was one of the prettiest things I’ve ever been to. Everyone was very inviting and although the heat beat through ties and dress coats, smiles radiated from every direction. When the sun went down, elegant lighting stretched the length of the field in which the wedding and reception were set. Additional lights beamed onto family photos hanging on trees all around. It really had a feel of togetherness, family, unity. I don’t know if it’s a Texas thing or just signs of an awesome family – but it was an amazing feeling to be a part of something so special and to see how stoked their family members were to get in the booth! I was also VERY excited to find FULLY STOCKED tubs of Jarritos! If you all are reading this, thanks for giving me such an awesome impression of the Lone Star state!

I also wouldn’t have made it out of Texas alive if it weren’t for my friends that so graciously let me crash their pads for the weekend. Jake, Jenny, Sean, Pete, & Candace were FANTASTIC hosts that gave me as much of a taste of Austin as I could chew in 48 hours. I’m very thankful for buds like these.

An Indiana boy comes to Magtown.

After graduating last August, I moved back to the Louisville area to work for a local book publisher. It was there that I was introduced to Magbooth’s work through a friend who also doubled as an event worker. I put in my application to work events, like so many hopefuls, but really got excited when I heard they were bringing on a second post-production employee. The job sounded like an amazing opportunity: amazing photos, people, books, mustaches – what else could a guy ask for?

I hurried down to Magbooth headquarters after my shift one day, we started rappin’ and that’s how it happened. My fearless leaders, Peter and Victor welcomed me with open arms and my teammate Heather patiently taught me about what goes on behind the scenes. For all of this, I’m very thankful.

My day-to-day responsibilities include filtering images and posting online albums, book-making, booth building, working the occasional event, general client correspondence and anything else the boys will throw at me. I enjoy every minute of it and the pot is only sweetened when I get to see the smiles of people in the booths, little kids flicking off cameras, and how excited people are when a photo booth comes through their event’s doors. It also helps that every morning I’m greeted by such a great group of people.

After a few weeks of getting settled in, I feel like I’m finally getting a grip on what Magbooth is and what Magbooth strives to be. It’s a great feeling to be a part of something so new, so warm. With that in mind, I’m hoping to take on as many projects and responsibilities as I can; so I can see not only how something so new comes to be but also how I can help, in any small way, to make things run a bit more smoothly. Fingers crossed.

After working in libraries, shoe stores, a book publisher and as a substitute teacher, I was ready to find somewhere that I could call "home." I think that's exactly what I've found in Magbooth.

In case there's anyone out there that thinks their boss is the best boss in the world, I have to tell ya you're wrong. My boss is the best boss in the world! There's a huge list of all the things Peter Tower has done for me, and right at the top of that list is letting me take off work for a month to go explore the pacific northwest and work on a wonderful farm in Washington. For a month -uploading and viewing photos, typing with fingers, and sitting in an pretty cute office with pretty cute people was replaced with digging in dirt, petting sheep, planting little seeds, climbing the side of a mountain, meeting wonderful new people, and getting to know myself a little better. Thank you, thank you, thank you Peter Tower! Thank you magbooth from the very bottom of my heart. And not just that, but thank you to everyone who loves magbooth so much, because without you I wouldn't have this wonderful job and therefore my adventure was given by you too! Fallen Trees and Bacon

This is how my morning started.
Owning the best photo booth company in the world has it's perks but it also has it's shortcomings. One of them is not getting a lot of sleep. I just got back to our Louisville office a couple days ago but I have been working super long hours which doesn't help me adjust back to east coast time. Last night I left the office in the wee hours of the morning with the hopes of sleeping till about 9 or 10am. Then it happened.
Boom! I was abruptly woken up after only a couple hours of sleep by the loudest rumbling crash boom bang (anyone catch the early 90's Roxette album reference?) that I have ever experienced. I thought the house was going to collapse down on top of me. Instantly I was wide awake and I started to survey the damage. A massive tree from the neighbors yard had fallen directly on top of where I sleep. Amazingly the roof held but most of the gutters and some windows did not. My depleted and sleep deprived mind and body initially fueled by the rush of shock adrenaline started to slowly drain until I finally realized that I had been standing out in the rain for 20 minutes just staring at the falling tree. I crawled back through the window to get back into my apartment and realizing that I would probably not be able to fall back asleep I decided that a cold shower would probably be my best bet of surviving the long day that lies ahead. Luckily the the landlord gets to handle the insurance battle with the neighbor over who gets to pay for all the damage.
Now the day is half over and I decided to share this story on our blog. Why not. To make it somewhat relevant to the world of Magbooth, here are some pics from the last week or so.
When traveling - always stay at a hotel that has a photo booth in the lobby and don't forget toothpaste and delicious Toffifay.
My cute ass nephew. He just turned 2 last week and is already planning to take over the family photo booth business some day.
This weekend I went to the Bacon Ball and tried way to many things that probably shouldn't have bacon in them.

Cultural Differences

When I first started my dream job here at Magnolia Photo Booth Co. people couldn't quite understand. When the common "so...what do you do" question came up, I would tell them proudly, "I'm the manager of a photo booth company." In return I would get weird head nods and awkward replies like "just photo booths huh?". I knew immediately that they pictured me sitting on a stool at a mall kiosk opening the curtain for a group of tweens looking for a good laugh. As much as I tried to explain our companies artistic edge and involvement in city life it served little purpose. It isn't until you have seen our booths in full swing, walked into our offices or seen us build a booth that you really get the idea of how one can have a full time job looking over and loving photo booths- just photo booths.

Last week I had the privileged to met my sister in Europe. Despite how difficult it is to separate myself from the world of weddings and events I made a vow to myself that for 8 days I would not think about photo booths. Two hours into my trip- I broke that promise.

Stepping off of the plane and into the streets of Berlin, I quickly realized why our company is founded by a German... they get it!

In Berlin, photo booths weren't a thing of the past or some tacky mall kiosk. Rather, the streets are littered with booths. People lined up in the rain simply waiting their turn on the small swivel stool and bight flash. My sister and I were no different. The weirdest part about it though was that while I was waiting in line, I didn't think about the promise I had made to myself. Rather, my sister and I anxiously awaited our turn, pondering over which theme we were going to go with for our big photo shoot. Finally we decided on "lost tourists". I think we nailed it.

After leaving Berlin and making our way to Paris we met a lot of amazing people and just as expected, they all asked, "so... what do you do?". With the language barriers and for simplicities sack, I would answer, "I'm an event planner". It was the closest thing I could think of that would make sense without the need of much explanation. I hated that response. It was a lie. I am a photo booth manager- an darn proud of it.People who are familiar with Magbooth always tell me, "you must have the best job in the world- nobody hates a photo booth". Truth is, just like any other job, it comes with an overabundance of computer time, answering phone calls and dealing with the everyday stresses of making photo booth wishes come true. However, while in Berlin, thousands of miles away from any Magbooths, I found myself giddy in front of a photo booth and realized... you never really can get tired of photo booths!

I just can't stop looking at the photos from Tim & Stephanie's wedding. They're basically the cutest couple ever and the photos are incredible. Tim & Stephanie came to the Magbooth office to book their photo booth and were a pleasure to work with - I just wish I would have been working the Magbooth at their reception; from the photos it looks like it was an awesome time. I've been a huge fan of Juan Maclean Photography since I met Juan a couple of years ago at a wedding here in Louisville and have enjoyed his work ever since... Amazing. Yo Ho Ho...

This weekend we had the Magbooth at JK McKnight's big birthday party here at Headliners in Louisville. JK is the founder and manager of the Forecastle festival... a huge, multi-day event which brings some pretty big deal musicians to Louisville (can you say The Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips or Cake?). The festival is a collection of music, art and activism and mixes entertainment with education while connecting the progressive Midwest... oh... and there's always a Magbooth there! So cheers to JK... Happy Birthday, Mate!

FYI... Here's the definition of forecastle for anyone wondering why everyone was dressed as a sailor or a pirate:

Fore·cas·tle (f’ok_sol) n. ~ A superstructure at the bow of a ship where the crew is housed. Hard at work in the boundless blue sea, a place where workers relax after a hard day of labor. A place where the people come together.

Love Is In the Booth!

For both lovers and haters of Valentine's Day, MagBooth brought everyone in agreeance.... flowers and free photos rock! Thanks to the lovely Morgan Davis and the rest of the gang at the Conservatory of Flowers here in Golden Gate Park, the MagBooth was able to enjoy some beautiful surroundings and the amazing Garden Railway exhibit.

With a string band, poetry, beer and of course the MagBooth the night was nothing short of a hit. Thanks again COF for a great evening!

Louisville loves the Magbooth

The Magbooth was out and about all over town this weekend getting some love here in our home city!

We were lucky enough to have a Magbooth for the Blue Apple Player's annual Blue Apple on Broadway fundraising event for the 4th year in a row. Blue Apple is a nationally acclaimed non-profit theater company that produces original and educational musicals and programs that engage young people. The fundraiser featured performances by Congressman John

Yarmouth, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and local community leaders like Gill Holland and Lynnie Meyer (just to name a few!). Good pics for a good cause!

The Magbooth was also a part of the Red & Black Ball which raised money for the Harriett B. Porter Cancer Education and Prevention Programs at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville. There is always something exciting happening in the Magbooth office. This morning I walked into work and there was a very professional photoshoot taking place. It was none other than our dearest Kirby & Hannah, two of our event workers but also a lovely couple! And get this, they met in one of our photo booths at a Trolley Hop. How sweet and picture perfect is that?! Check out the pic below, it is total proof that photo booth magic really does exist.

One of my favorite things about my co-workers is they all love music! And you never know what will be spinning at the Magbooth Headquarters. For example, at this very moment I am playing Nick Drake in the main area while Heather and Victor are in their office playing Whitney Houston. Some days it's Disney theme songs, classic Reba McEntire, Johnny Cash, Guided by Voices, M83 or Ratatat. You really never know what will be playing up in here, but on a good day it's a regular dance party, and we love visitors! Come by the office and hop in the photo booth, song requests are highly permissible.

BOOTZ!!!

Things here at the Magbooth Headquarters have been quite hectic lately. Thanks to a lot of great people we funded our Kickstarter project, Etsy has been in our office filming (more to come) and Willy&Alex have been back on the West Coast for about a week.

Well, this is my love note to Alex "Bootz" Bartz and a shout out to tell her how much I miss her. I'm still the newest addition to the company and for months Alex and I corresponded through email, video, and chat. Needless to say, I was super nervous meeting her in person because I thought "What if she doesn't like me?" and "What if she thinks I'm totally lame?" Anticipation got the best of me but it turned out to be the best week ever here at Magbooth! Months prior we had already established we both have an undeniable love for boots (which happens to be her nickname). And Alex definitely had some pretty rad boots packed with her this trip. I can't wait to go to SanFran to check out her whole collection. So in the spirit of awesome boots and Alex I found a few photos to post.

Hannah & Anthony

Hannah & Anthony's wedding is starting to gain some major notice and I'm really happy Magnolia Photo Booth Co. could be part of their big day. I actually met Hannah the day after the wedding when they were disassembling all the goodies from the reception. (the ceremony/reception site was the Green Building, which is right next door to the Magbooth office) She stopped by our office and after chatting with her a few moments about antiques, the wedding, and growing up in a small town I knew we were kindred spirits and we would be friends. Everything about their wedding was thought out, personal, and well executed that I can't pick just one favorite thing. But I do love the homemade broach bouquet, her hairpiece, the sparklers, and the wooden backdrop Anthony made out of wood from the family farm!

Handmade Weddings

Lately I haven't had much time to browse my favorite blogs because I've been up to my ears processing contracts here in the office. But I'm not complaining! It just means Magbooth is taking over the world and I get to be part of the craziness. Today though I did take a few minutes to daydream and I stumbled upon this bit of goodness at the DS blog, it made me giddy to no end. Eunice and Sabrina Moyle, of Hello Lucky! recently came out with the new book Handmade Weddings: 50 Projects to Style and Personalize Your Big Day. Personally I'm no where near getting married but I am a total sucker for a good DIY project and I like pretty pictures. Another reason to be excited about this book is because Magbooth has also had the pleasure of working with these lovely ladies! A great big congratulations to Hello Lucky! from all of us here at Magnolia Photo Booth Co.

Kickstarter my heart!

On January 6th 2011 we achieved the funding goal for our 'portrait of america' project. So to mark the occasion we set up a photo booth in our Louisville office, bought a little bit of beer and took some photos. The 3up strip is becoming more and more popular and is what we will use on the trip. Most members of Team Magbooth attempted some pretty epic full body 3up shots. why we do this

Something so simple as getting your picture taken is something that most of us, myself included, don't even think twice about. But for some, it can mean so much more.

I recently worked an event at a medical respite center, where homeless men and women were given the chance to get in the Magbooth. The concept of a free machine that would not only take their photograph, but also print it out for them to keep was almost hard for some to believe.
There was one gentleman in particular who made a lasting impression on me. Initially, my attempts to lure him into the booth were failing and then somehow I convinced him to get in. He moaned and groaned, and reluctantly got in. The curtain closed and within the next minute a huge change had occurred- he was laughing and trying on all of the props! He could'nt get enough, and got back in the booth multiple times. Afterwards, he told me that he hadn't had his picture taken in over 15 years. He planned on mailing the pictures to his family, who hadn't seen any pictures of him in over 15 years.
The director of the center told me that she had never seen the men and women smile, laugh and enjoy themselves like that the entire time she had worked there. Something so simple as getting your picture taken in a photo booth can bring pure happiness to people from all backgrounds and in this case hopefully bring a family a bit closer together.

Victor Turns 2!

Victor Hicks is my friend.
He also is the first full time employe that I hired 2 years ago. Since then he has worked tirelessly and has helped make the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. what it is today. I trust him completely and hope to be his friend for life. Someday we will go do something that has nothing to do with photo boothing. It will probably feel strange.

Julie & Zack's Beach Wedding

Picture an amazing beach wedding... Do you have that in your mind's eye? Where are you? Florida? Hawaii?

How about Chicago?

That's right. The Magbooth was recently a part of an awesome beach wedding in the great Windy City. The 53rd St Beach House is an amazing venue and is completely perfect... minus all the traveling to those more southerly beaches!

When I originally began talking with Julie about getting the photo booth to her wedding she sent me very detailed layouts as well as timelines and everything a wedding vendor could ever ask for. She had me at the first .pdf. I love a well organized bride and Julie was amazing. Not only organized but keen on detail - I WISH I had a photo of her centerpieces... I can't even begin to explain how great they were. Not only that but she was simply one of the nicest brides I've ever worked with... super awesome.

Needless to say the photo booth was a huge hit... but the whole evening was great. Originally the reception was supposed to take place outside but rain spoiled that plan. I distinctly recall waking up that morning and my first thought was "Oh geez... Julie is going to freak out", but she was totally ready with her backup plan and everything went off without a hitch.

I wish I had a better camera than my iPhone because the photos I had just don't do this beautiful day justice!

Peter the Great

One of the reasons I love my job so much is that I get to work for an amazing boss. Mr. Peter Tower, Owner & Frontiersman of the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. was recently interviewed by Levis Workshop! The workshop currently features a photo booth crafted by, you guessed it, Peter Tower! Photo Booths & Barns

Recently I had a NYC client ask if the photo booth could make it to a wedding that was taking place in a barn. First reaction, my heart swooned! As much as I love weddings the ones that take place outside, more specifically, weddings which take place in barns are my absolute favorite.

If you're meeting me for the first time you probably wouldn't guess I grew up on a farm. I still love the country, especially around harvest time, and any excuse to dig out the cowboy boots or the green muck boots is a good one. What's the saying. . . "You can take the girl outta the country, but you can't take the country outta the girl."

There is something about barns, weddings, and photo booths that sound so magical and would make for a great event. I wanted to write you a little note to let you know how unbelievably happy we are with absolutely every element of our Magbooth experience.

I am an English teacher, and still I cannot find words strong enough to express my sheer joy and adoration for you, your company, your magbooth, Victor, Heather and, most of all, Tenille.

From our first experience with Magbooth (at the Renegade Craft Fair in Bklyn) to the days following our wedding, it has been an absolute dream.

The Magbooth Team was so willing to help us with anything and so supportive of all of the different elements of our wedding. The shining star, of course, being Tenille. In the e-mails I exchanged with Tenille, I found someone who was not only passionate about her job, but passionate about MY wedding, and eventually, I found an amazing new friend.

Every one of my guests has told me how much fun they had taking photos in the photo booth. The quality of the photos, of course, is unparalleled, but the props that Tenille brought for us, and the special signature that Victor designed for us were the icing on the cake.

By the middle of the day I need a little pick-me-up here in the office, so for the last month I've been playing Brainbheats aka the multitalented local Louisville musician Brian Healey. The Celebration of Curation Mix I keep returning to can be found at both Mixcloud and the awesome music blog Pretty Much Amazing.

Ironically enough the second song is titled Photobooth by Friendly Fires. How appropriate huh, I've designated it as our official Magbooth theme song. Now, you should proceed to crank it loud and shake it fast.

I spy a Magbooth photo! Today I was browsing DesignSponge (my favorite blog ever!) and spotted our infamous four square grid photo (bottom image) in one of their posts. If you're not familiar with DS I highly recommend heading over this minute to peruse their sneak peek section for some guilty pleasure daydreaming.

The two photos below are from the post about Whitney & Dustin, the amazing husband/wife duo behind Oh, Darling!. They are a wedding and lifestyle photography team based in Brooklyn, NY and western North Carolina, and I'm pretty sure if I met them personally I'd totally be smitten. Their style is impeccable and they are oh so cute! Turns out our photo booth will be making an appearance at the same wedding next year. I can't wait!

I just want to say congratulations to Melissa for her third successful year with her awesome store, The Makery! We had the Magbooth at the anniversary party and I was super happy to be there with it! There was wine, cheese, yummy bread, cookies (!!!), babies, fellows with beards and ladies with lovely outfits, violins, and maybe a banjo or two. Here's an interesting little tidbit about this photo: while the groom and the rest of the wedding guests were outside waiting... these ladies were having the time of their lives in the Magbooth. I wouldn't say the bride was actually late to the alter... but she was certainly delayed! It was one of the best kick-offs for a wedding ever! Brittany & Ryan were an amazing couple to work with, they were so hospitable and just all-around great people and I'm glad that I was able to have the Magbooth be a part of their special day. It is also important to note that their reception was one of my favorites of the summer. Barbecue and the perfect number of guests plus great weather and a cute venue equals an awesome evening!

Congrats to the newlyweds and a big thank you from The Magbooth for the merriment and delicious barbecue you all provided!

I'm sure it goes without saying that sending price quotes day-in and day-out is probably not my favorite thing in the whole wide world - it just gets a little old.

But then there are the days that I log-in... and I have a little gem like this sitting in my awaiting quotes pile. This quote request was sent in by Staci, who found our Magbooth operation deep in the heart of Texas. Staci writes:

"Ok, I don't actually live in Austin (Oklahoma City) and I'm not actually getting married (single) BUT... I do want a Magbooth at my reception someday!! So, two questions: 1. Do you travel to Oklahoma? 2. Price range...?"

And I immediately knew I loved her. How could you not laugh out loud reading that first thing in the morning? Needless to say we decided that we'll have the Magbooth be a part of Staci's big day (whenever that may be)! Its always the little things that make my day and make what we do here at the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. so rewarding and so special to my little heart.

So thank you for being rad, Staci. And for making my day. And for being my new BFF.

In teaming up with 92.3 FM to do Music in the Park (June 3rd- be there or be lame!) I was chosen to write a short blurb about MagBooth to be read on air. In brainstorming ideas I came to a realization... there really is no way to sum up our company in a couple short sentences. How do you tell thousands of listeners just how rad your company really is inside and out? I really have no idea?

Thus, I thought I would tell you all here. We all know I am bias, but for good reasons. Working with the MagBooth Team for nearly a year now- I have seen just how hard the entire company works at making every aspect of photo boothing more awesome than it already is.

If you've read this blog for very long you've probably noticed that Magbooths are prone to popping up all over the place... and I'm pleased to report that the Magbooth will be making a special appearance in St. Louis this summer! (An important side note: I love St. Louis)

I'm super excited to be working with Angie (my newest best friend for life and all around enjoyable and awesome bride to be) and Corey for what is sure to be an amazing wedding. The couple is "going all in" at the Ameristar Casino Resort & Spa and will be inviting family & friends to attend the ceremony and then hang out, lose some money at the black jack table and of course, have their photos taken in the one and only Magbooth.

Last week, Victor and I got to take the Magbooth down to Austin, TX! We had a wonderful time, and got to be part of a really awesome promotional event for eset.

There was a cowboy who made the bitter beer face like none other, fun girls who ran around to tell people about the photo booth, and another Heather making thick lined caricatures of those curious to see an artistic interpretation of their faces. Unluckily, my camera began to die halfway throughout the day, so I didn't get to take as many pictures as I would have liked, though here are some from my digital:

A Photo Booth Came to Chicago and People Were Happy

As you may or may not know, the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. made their arrival in the Windy City and has decided to take it over. Secret mission #1? Infiltrate IndieWed (the most amazing bridal show ever) and wow brides-to-be with our amazing photo booth, mustaches and charming personalities. Did we succeed you might ask? Why yes. Yes we did.

IndieWed was a fantastic success and we had the pleasure of meeting tons of super nice brides as well as some pretty awesome vendors. I will go ahead and be brutally honest for just a second and say that bridal shows are not my favorite things to work. But IndieWed was totally different than anything I've ever been to before. The show specifically catered to unconventional couples looking for companies that more closely reflected their individual styles and it was a flippin' hit.

Highlights of the day? Well let me tell you all about those...

First of all, Kelly Maron of PaperStories (the lady who made IndieWed happen) was completely wonderful and thoroughly helpful when we arrived. Bridal shows can be insane sometimes and it was refreshing to work with Kelly - so organized, attentive and all around great! I cannot wait to work with her again! Do make sure you check out PaperStories for some nifty letterpress work!

I met the lovely and talented Mary Kate McKenna. I've secretly read her blog for a little while and I absolutely adore her! She came by the booth several times with her mom and the photos of them are priceless!

Music was provided pretty much the whole day by my new favorite dynamic dj duo - Toast & Jam. They were very sweet and allowed me to take this photo of them after the show. Best musical choice of the day??? Shakira's She-Wolf (which they appropriately turned the volume up on after the show ended).

And then there was Bennifer of FoodieRegistry. Ben & Jennifer were swamped all day and I know I enjoyed several mints - compliments of their booth. I'm so glad they stopped by our booth and jumped in. It was great meeting them and hearing about their awesome registry business... seriously the best idea I've ever heard of in my life. All in all it was a great day... one of the most delicious things we had was from Glazed Chicago Donuts. Sadly these were consumed too quickly to be photographed but I promise you that the Chinese 5-Spice with Chocolate donut was literally to die for. If I am ever to be married I will forego cake in lieu of a smorgasbord of these fine treats.

Chicago takeover? Done and done.

As an employee of the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. I know there's more to photo booths than simply being awesome, fun and amazing. I know that in order to succeed as a business we have to increase bookings, grow, innovate, advertise, bleed, sweat and work as hard as our little bodies and brains can. Long weekends and late night photo booth events can sometimes wear one out... but thankfully all it takes is four flashes in the photo booth to make me remember what its really all about...

A few days ago my friend Andrew brought in his Mimi for a surprise visit and four such flashes made me feel very fortunate to be part of such an amazing company and such a timeless phenomenon. There's something incredibly special about not only the experience you have in the photo booth, but the actual print you grab from the tray. Nothing compares to capturing those four moments frozen in time like a photo booth and I'm one of the luckiest people I know because these machines are a part of my life. So thank you Magbooth and thank you Andrew & Mimi for making my day and reminding me how fortunate I am to have such an amazing job.

The Luckiest Photo Booth in the Bay Area

Ok... so I'm not getting married anytime soon, lets just be honest about that. However... because of my connection to the photo booth I constantly find myself right in the middle of wedding hoopla and even in my free time I catch myself perusing wedding blogs and basically planning my non-existent wedding, complete with the Magnolia Photo Booth Co.

In addition to planning my big shindig... I also obsess over things like letterpress invitations & save the dates; especially when they're being done by Hello!Lucky (quite possibly the most fantastic company in the Bay area). With brides and grooms swarming the room at the Four Season's Hotel yesterday, I discovered one thing...I really want to take a helicopter ride some time. After that thought though, I realized that aside from the fake moss and dangling tree gems- bridal fairs can provide a lot of diamonds in the rough. With the lovely ladies from Hello! Lucky by the booth's side I met a ton of fantastic soon to be newlyweds that I hope to see again soon!

For New Years this year I headed up to New York City. Some friends from Germany were in town and my friends who live in Brooklyn are expecting a baby so I spent a couple days with them well finishing up the house before the baby comes. The freezing weather has produced some interesting sites. A water main broke and flooded half a street and then the water froze locking in the cars that were parked on the street.

On New Years Eve my German friends and I headed down to the lower east side of Manhattan in the snow. We ended up having a fabulous meal at Inoteca and then headed out to some neighborhood bars to say good bye to 2009. We went to what I knew as 7B but is now the Horseshoe bar and then headed over to the Lakeside Lounge. I had not been to Lakeside in about 5 years, but was looking forward some good times in their Photo Booth. It is a wet process old school photo booth that takes pretty good images. They are a little dark, but they have great contrast and the classic 4-up strip. We rolled in out of the cold to find some British girls waiting outside of the booth oozing with joy about what is going to show up in the photos that they just took. After a couple minutes my friends and I decided to jump in. We crammed in and did out best to fit our four faces into the frame. We exited the booth and the Brit girls were still waiting for their picture.

The pictures never came.

The Brits and I told the bartenders what was going on and we received a very annoyed and offensive response. Pretty much they told us that we were stupid and had to be patient. Some more innocent victims purchased photo booth tokens. We warned them that it was not working and there response was that the bartenders said it was. In all about 8 more people went in the booth at $4 a piece. All the while it would take pictures, but nothing ever came out.

Being some one who designs and build photo booths, it is very sad to see such a lovely machine not working properly, but even more it is disappointing to see a venue abuse the allure of photo booths to take advantage of people. Most people come away with the feeling that photo booths are lame and never work. I hate photo booths that don't work.

Back to the story...
All of a sudden it was 1 minute to midnight and plastic flutes of champagne were being passed around. I quickly scooted up to the bar and grabbed four and headed back to my friends. The Stones cover band that was playing started a preemptive countdown mixed with vulgarities about sex and drugs between Mick and Keith. They were about 45 seconds off from the TV in the corner, so most people ignored them. We tried to concentrate on the little TV to get the right timing and then toasted away 2009. Then we hugged and kissed and wished everyone all the best. All of a sudden it was 2010 and I looked up and there was Dick Clark tan as ever and J-Lo doing high kicks in a spandex onesy and a fur coat. I am not sure if that was a great first image of the new year, but I'll take it.

We stayed for a little while longer to have another drink, but then we left to explore some more bars and eventually the tunnels under the city that would deliver us safely back to our beds. I have to admit that I was deeply disappointed by the lack of photo boothing that happened that night. Especially since there was such a heavy tease. The booth flashed 4 times. It captured us in 4 different special poses. It made us believe that it was going to deliver 4 frozen moments that would make us smile and provide an amazing memory of that evening. If it had a sign that said OUT of ORDER, then we would have accepted it and continued on. But for the bar to keep selling tokens and then the machine taking pictures drove the stake of sorrow deeper into our hearts. (I really enjoyed writing that last line. Maybe it's a little dramatic.) The worst part was the bartenders continually telling us that we just had to wait longer and assuming that we were stupid. And knowing that they just kept on selling tokens ruining more and more moments for other people. I tried to intervene as much as I could.

The only saving grace was my quadcamera app on my iPhone that we used in the non-working photo booth. It gave us a little taste of some photo booth magic sans having an actual print to hold. Of course the evening was a great success. It ended up with an entertaining ride home on the L back to brooklyn with me consuming 2 bags of Rieces Pieces. Delicious! It just might have reached a higher state of glory had the photo booth been spitting out frozen faces of awesomeness.

So, Happy New Year to all, except those two bartenders at Lakeside. Alright, it's the new year and who wants to start off not liking people. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Who likes working on Sunday?

There are lots of things I would typically enjoy doing on my Sunday - and as you might guess... working isn't one of those things. So I found myself less than enthused about setting up a Magbooth for an event this past Sunday. Sluggishly I unloaded the booth, sighed, and began my set up.

With the booth ready and a small crowd already gathering at 21c, I prepared to hear the speakers lined up for the evening - only one of whom I was familiar with. The event: a fundraiser for Kentuckians for the Commonwealth to raise money to stop mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia, the speakers: Wendell Berry, Erik Reese and Rebecca Howell - all Kentucky authors who contributed to the book Plundering Appalachia.

I'd only vaguely heard of the cause and wasn't actually certain what was so obscene about topless mountains, but after hearing the speakers and learning about the horrible devastation, destruction and disfiguration occurring in Appalachia I was no longer annoyed to be working on a Sunday. I felt privileged to be hearing what these speakers had to say and I felt privileged that the company I work for is able to be a part of some amazing causes such as this one.

The evening wrapped up with some musical entertainment provided by Jim James of My Morning Jacket and as the crowd dissipated and the curtain was closed for the last shots in the photo booth, I no longer felt sluggish... no longer wished to be at home. I felt great to be a part of something bigger than myself, inspired to spread the word about the horrors of mountaintop removal coal mining and grateful to the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. for allowing me to be a part of the event.

The Day after Thanksgiving.

Victor and I have this joke that I am homeless. Now of course this is NOT TRUE, sometimes I just tend to look a little homeless. I live off of the beauty of the Magbooth. Truly, it is a beautiful relationship we have.

That being said, this Friday, a day after Thanksgiving, I worked my first solo event. You see, this is the day I realized that the photo booth doesn't just look beautiful on its own! It takes care, patience, muscle, and much love. It's a good thing I had just eaten well the day before, or else I may not have had as much care, muscle, patience, and love.

Daniel had come along in the beginning to help me set the booth up. Many steps involved in this process, and I attached its body, while Daniel hooked up its brains. In around 20 minutes, the Magbooth's black curtains were blowing in the wind while its eye snapped a few test shots of Daniel.

For the next three hours I got to experience the Magbooth at work. It sat quiet outside on a very busy street, while humans either passed by, shy of fun, or stopped in to have one moment, that otherwise might have been forgotten, captured up on a 4x6 piece of photo paper. I spoke to a little boy in a batman mask and pretended to be cat woman, joked around with a happy intoxicated couple, tried to coax a teenage son into the booth with his mother.

The Magbooth brought myself and so many others joy and memories on the day after Thanksgiving.

Today was my one year anniversary with the Magnolia Photo Booth Co! I must admit it doesn't really feel like a year. It seems like just the other day when I worked my first event with Peter (the old steel John Wilkes at a local prom)... and now here we are... opening new markets and growing as fast as a magic beanstalk.

I'm a super lucky gent. I have the most amazing job, working for the most amazing company and working with some truly amazing people. I ♥ the Magbooth. Happy Anniversary!

Emily Kissel : Designer and Photo Booth Curtain Maker

The other day I had the wonderful opportunity to take some photos of Emily Kissel's beautiful hand made clothing. Thanks to another creative guy, the one who owns our building, the yard in the back was the perfect backdrop for Emily's creations. Not only does she make men's apparel, dresses, baby clothes, and yoga bags, she makes the curtains on our photobooths!

A Magbooth kind of November

Yesterday I took the nice weather as an opportunity to photograph our new envelope designs!

Here is one, basking in the sun of a warm November afternoon.

The envelopes can be used for guests to take home the copy of their Magbooth photo, invitations, save the dates, etc.

The best design/artist duo in Louisville is Amanda Bishop and Ty Kreft. Not only did we enjoy a delicious evening together for pizza and monster drawing with some much shorter and younger folk this evening, but Ty is also the Oak behind the solid design of all Magbooths. Amanda can take credit for some wicked mural paintings at our office and for being downright awesome. But most of all I am proud to battle the forces of evil with them both by my side on Sunday nights in our coed soccer league.
